The Gilder uses a very soft badger hair brush to gently smooth over the new gold leaf. This is called “skewing off”.
He has no hard hat on as this would hinder him trying to see what he is trying to gild and would most likely damage or scratch any flames that are already gilded.

Masons mark the profile of the original stone onto the new stone so that it can be carved by hand
to finish flush when fixed
The stone carver offers up a model of the missing Generals Baton which has been missing from the carved panel for many years.
Great effort was made to research what the missing item of carving should be.
The head of the figure of Hope shows evidence of past damage and repair.
Although basically sound, this area will require very careful restoration.
The stone carver uses plastacine models to achieve the correct size and shape of a dragons claw before he will carve it from stone.
