Works are now well under way in the compound area and around the
base of the Monument.
Notice the new stones being installed at low level.

A typical stone indent repair to one of the corners
This still has to be "trimmed in" to match the surrounding stones

This looks very strange but is in fact a very simple and effective working method.
It is known as a birds nest, either formed using mortar or as seen here using part of a disposable cup; we can then fill the nest with watery mortar which will flow through the joints filling any voids in the joints or behind the stones. This is called gravity grouting.

On the north elevation stones are cut out ready for the lightning tape to be joined. This will then be covered by the new stone.

This is an historic sign on the North West corner which is being left undisturbed.
Surrounding stones are being prepared for repair.
